Campaign Update: Growing Food Is a Right, Not a Privilege! | OFPC

July 1, 2014

Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign to protect the right to grow food in Oakland!

Our petition, “Growing Food is a Right, Not a Conditional Privilege,” sent a strong message the Oakland Planning Commission and City Council. We have paused the petition to allow them time to discuss our requests and issue a formal response.

To date, there has been an inconsistent response from public officials regarding the exact scope of conditional use requirements for growing food, as reported in the East Bay Express article published on June 25, 2014, “Confusion Reigns Over Oakland Urban Gardens.”

We are following this issue closely and will continue to advocate for the removal of all barriers to growing food in Oakland.

Nobody should have to pay the City to grow and eat your own food!

Please follow us on Facebook & Twitter to stay connected and get updates on the campaign.

If you are interested in joining our work for food justice, we invite you to apply to be a member of the Oakland Food Policy Council. We are currently recruiting new community members and youth representatives.
